Holbrook, New York, July 7, 2017 – National non-profit World T.E.A.M. Sports’ August 1-2 Coastal Team Challenge will join together adaptive and able-bodied athletes in a challenging outdoor sporting endeavor. Paddling Hobie two-person Mirage Oasis kayaks, the 32 participating athletes will travel 16 nautical miles across the Great South Bay of New York’s southern Long Island coast on an overnight journey.
Each team will include one developmentally-disabled athlete and one able-bodied athlete. Most participating athletes in this year’s Challenge are from Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. Working together to pilot the 15-foot Polyethylene kayaks, the athletes will face the many challenges of open water boating. Rising and lowering tides, fast-moving summer rain showers and wakes from passing boats and ships will all present challenges once they depart from the Patchogue Beach Club the morning of August 1. Close teamwork and cooperation between the athletes will be critical to their successful afternoon arrival at East Moriches the following day.

Sports events, this event challenges every participant and volunteer.”
Long Island’s non-profit Independent Group Home Living Program will coordinate the selection of the participating adaptive athletes. For many of these athletes, kayaking on the open sea will be a new experience, as will the August 1 overnight camp at Smith Point County Park. Upon their arrival in East Moriches, the athletes will be met by family, friends and colleagues for a celebratory dinner at The Coral restaurant.
Like all World T.E.A.M. Sports athletic events, the Coastal Team Challenge is inclusive and changes lives through outdoor sports. Participating adaptive athletes encourage other athletes with disabilities to take up sporting activities, while able-bodied athletes are inspired at the dedication and perseverance of their adaptive colleagues.
