An Inspirational Long Island Coastal Adventure

August 6-7, 2019 Coastal Team Challenge

The 2019 Coastal Team Challenge from national non-profit World T.E.A.M. will bring together teams of developmentally and physically disabled and able-bodied athletes for a two-day, 16 nautical mile, non-competitive sea kayak journey along the beautiful coast of Long Island, New York. Paddling by hand and by foot pedal along the island’s southern coast, camping out under the stars and working together, teams overcame obstacles and challenges, eliminated barriers for participating adaptive athletes and inspired those who are able-bodied.

Five teams of four persons will participate in the 2019 Challenge, each team using two-person kayaks, matching an adaptive and able-bodied athlete. Independent Group Home Living Program, a non-profit organization that provides programs, services and support for people with developmental disabilities, allowing them to realize their full potential as human beings and contributing members of their communities, will organize each participating team.

The 2019 Challenge will begin with breakfast at the Patchogue Beach Club in Patchogue, New York. Following breakfast, the teams will launch and travel east for Bellport and the Bellport Bay Yacht Club for lunch. Teams will use two-person double kayaks along the Long Island coast to pedal and paddle the 10 nautical miles to Smith Point County Park. At Smith Point, the teams will camp and have dinner on the beach. The following morning, the teams will launch again, and travel east six nautical miles to East Moriches. At the Challenge finish on the second afternoon, the teams and their friends and families will join together for a pig roast and celebration of their successful journey at The Coral restaurant in East Moriches, New York.

Like all World T.E.A.M. sporting events, the 2019 Coastal Team Challenge will emphasize teamwork and cooperation between adaptive athletes and able-bodied athletes.
