The passing of World TEAM Sports‘ 2010 Sea to Shining Sea cross-country support rider Bruce McCarthy December 15 left ride participants and supporters saddened at the unexpected news.

A 61-year-old chemical engineer of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Bruce was a strong supporter of his younger brother, Rory, who participated in the Sea to Shining Sea ride. Rory rides as a hand cyclist in several World TEAM Sports events, including the World Ride and the Face of America ride from Washington to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

In a Facebook posting, Rory provided a tribute to his brother.

“I am so sad to lose my big brother Bruce. He was a great, generous, kind hearted man and friend. He was a husband to his loving wife Alice, a father of three amazing sons Kevin, Ryan, and Sean. Bruce always saw possibility and opportunity in everyday life. His open heart and encouraging ways made a big impression on his extended community of family and friends.

“I was so lucky to cycle with Bruce this summer on the Sea to Shining Sea cross country bike ride. I could not have done it without his encouragement and unending determination. To all our teammates on the ride, thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Bruce loved his World TEAM Sports friends, more than you may know.

“‘Bruce, you always encouraged me to push myself, take on new challenges, and to love life. I love you Bruce. You are dearly missed.'”

A full obituary can be found at the Brown Funeral Home, along with a guest book and tributes.

The McCarthy family requests that memorial contributions be made to the St. Leo the Great Catholic Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 93, Inwood, WV 25428.
