At the board’s December 16 meeting in Redwood City, California, Mr. Benson was elected as an independent representative to the national Olympics sports governing body. Mr. Benson’s election was in part owing to his deep passion and experience in supporting disabled athletes through World T.E.A.M. Sports events. According to the US Olympic Committee, the Committee believes Mr. Benson’s “leadership skills will energize and support” Paralympic sports in the United States.

Currently the Chief Executive Officer of Benson Botsford, LLC, a Boston-based private investment firm, Mr. Benson is a Chicago native who is a past CEO of John Hancock Funds, a former Olympic sponsor.

With Stephen Whisnant, later to serve as World T.E.A.M. Sports‘ first executive director, Mr. Benson organized the Ride Across America in 1987. This month-long, 2,650-mile bicycle relay with able-bodied and disabled athletes served as the model for future World T.E.A.M. Sports events, and was produced in association with California Special Olympics.

An active long-distance runner, Mr. Benson participates in many World T.E.A.M. Sports events, including the annual Adventure TEAM Challenge in Colorado. He currently serves as a director of Achilles International, a non-profit organization for disabled track athletes with chapters and members in 70 countries.
